Bragging on Myself

I'm usually bragging on the girls, but today I'm patting myself on the back! My braiding skills are really improving. This morning I braided both Ruby's and Elizabeth's hair. Although I've been practicing on Ruby for a couple of months, this is the very first time I've cornrowed Elizabeth's hair -- in fact, Elizabeth told me that even in Ethiopia she had never had her hair braided because she was a "little" girl. So, needless to say, Elizabeth is feeling quite stunning in her braids and beads...swinging her head around. And I think Ruby's hair is they best I've done yet!

This morning it took me about 3 1/2 hours to do both girls' hair. I usually average around one and a half to two hours per head depending on how complex I try to get with the style. I get a little faster each time -- and a little better and getting the braids straighter and tighter. Of course, some of the time is also in putting on all the beads. They REALLY love their beads!

That is fantastic Rebecca! I am so impressed. What kind of product do you put in their hair before braiding. My biggest problem is getting smoothness and no fuzzies.

Hey Julie! The "fuzzies" have been my biggest challenge too. This time I did something a little different, and I think it helped. I had just bathed the girls and conditioned their hair. I waited until their hair was about 2/3 dry to start braiding, and then each section I was starting to braid I rubbed some African Pride Olive Oil and Rosemary moisturizer into that section and combed it through. It made the hair softer but not too slippery to hold onto. I also had an easier time with keeping frizz out of Elizabeth's than Ruby's because Ruby's hair is just naturally more wiry. The true test was sleeping on it last night, and it held up pretty good. I wrap their head in a scarf for sleeping so the braids don't frizz so much -- good advice from my friend, Kennde.

I tried to comment from fb yesterday, but it wouldn't let me! )o:
I LOVE IT! The style and braiding are awesome! Faven and Diborah love the beads too--they love to shake their heads and hear the clicking. Emma made me put beads in her hair yesterday--um, doesn't quite look the same!
You are doing great!
